A 19th century Washburn banjo in very good condition.

The Style 1135 was part of Washburn’s high-end banjo line, showcasing the company’s reputation for elegant craftsmanship and rich tonal quality. These banjos were made in Chicago by Lyon & Healy, under the Washburn name, and were marketed to serious players and professionals.

Key Features:

  • Rim and Tone Ring: Typically features a laminated maple rim, often with a brass tone ring for added clarity and projection.
  • Neck: Usually carved maple with ornate inlay work on the fingerboard and peghead, including intricate pearl or celluloid patterns.
  • Inlay and Decoration: The 1135 models are known for their elaborate inlays, likely including engraved mother-of-pearl, with a floral or vine motif, especially on the peghead and fingerboard.
  • Hardware: High-quality friction or geared tuners, often with decorative grained ivoroid buttons and nickel-plated hardware.

Sound & Style:

The 1135 produces a clear, sweet, and responsive tone, ideal for early jazz, ragtime, or classic fingerstyle playing. Its construction leans more toward the classic banjo traditions rather than bluegrass.

From the original catalog: "11-inch German silver shell, both edges wired, white maple hoop, shaded and polished inside; new Washburn straining hoop, 24 imperial brackets, imperial nuts, superior quality calfskin head; fine mahogany neck, richky polished, beautiful carved heel; extra heavy ebony finger-board 18 inches long; elaborately inlad with engraved pearl position marks; 20 German silver frets; ebony head-piece inlaid with fancy pearl figures; patent adjustable tail-piece, white champion pegs; all metal parts finely nickel-plated."
